When booting up we get this error 301 in the beginning of start up before the Windows screen even came out. if you hit enter it boots right into windows and loads normally. Investigating a solution to this problem led us to a forum to the HP support site where one person suggested updating the BIOS.
updating the BIOS is not always the safest thing to do because it could leave you with a disabled computer should something happen in the middle of the installation like losing power. it’s important to have a backup of the BIOS before attempting to repair. This HP 2000 laptop has a recovery partition and HP tools partition as well and the regular windows 7 or Windows 10 partition on the hard drive which enables you to restore back to factory settings(if you have upgraded the operating system it will not bring it back to the upgraded state) . run Diagnostics even when the rest of the computer has failed. http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/279607-can-s-m-r-t-301-error-fixed-software.html

As it turned out in my instance the hard drive had begun to fail and updating the BIOS didn’t fix the problem.
